کتاب «فی معرفت الحیل الهندسیه» اثر بدیعالزمان جزری، مهندس، طراح و هنرمند سده ششم هجری تمدن اسلامی است که در آن پنجاه دستگاه خودکار بهشیوهای دقیق و مشابه فرایند طراحی محصول، همراه با مصورسازی شرح داده شده است. یکی از معدود پژوهشهای هنری که درباره این کتاب صورت گرفته، «رساله جزری درباره دستگاههای خودکار» است که در سال 1924 میلادی توسط کوماراسوامی تألیف شده است. این کتابچه که هنوز ترجمهای به فارسی از آن منتشر نشده، هم بهواسطه رویکرد هنرپژوهانه تحقیق و هم جایگاه مؤلف آن، دارای ارزش والایی در تاریخ هنر است که در این پژوهش، بازخوانی و واکاوی شده است. روش این تحقیق، توصیفی – تحلیلی و تاریخی است و در طی آن، متن کتابچه کوماراسوامی پیرامون رساله جزری به فارسی ترجمه شد و بههمراه برخی دادههای کتابخانهای دیگر مورد مطالعه و تحلیل قرار گرفت. سئوال اصلی در این تحقیق آن است که کوماراسوامی بهعنوان یک هنرپژوه بر کدام ویژگیهای کتاب جزری تأکید میکند؟ بنابراین هدف این پژوهش یافتن ویژگیهای هنری کتاب جزری از نگاه کوماراسوامی بود که در 7 مورد از متن کتابچه مذکور استخراج گردید. بهطور کلی میتوان گفت کوماراسوامی کوشیده با توجه به اطلاعات محدود زمان تألیف متن، با بهرهگیری از استدلالهای بصری و تصویری، برخی ابهامات و اشتباهات را پاسخ دهد و ویژگیهای هنری و خصوصا وجوه مرتبط با تاریخ این اثر هنری و علمی، مانند نوشتهها، نام سلاطین، نشانهگذاریها، ویژگیهای خاص سبکشناسی و غیره را بررسی نماید، اما اکثر نکات کوماراسوامی، بیش از آن که مبتنی بر زیباییشناسی و سبکشناسی باشد، بر پایه دانش تاریخ هنر است و این کتابچه را شاید بتوان نخستین تاریخنگاری هنر از کتاب جزری دانست؛ نکته قابل توجه آن است که کوماراسوامی، جزری را ابتدا یک هنرمند و نهایتا در درجه دوم یک اندیشمند میخواند و این استنباط از سوی یک تاریخدان هنر میتواند بسیار پراهمیت باشد.
