صندوق قبرهای چوبی ازجمله مهمترین تولیدات چوبی دوران اسلامی ایران محسوب میشوند. تاکنون بسیاری از این صندوقها در پژوهشهای مختلف بررسی و معرفی شدهاند؛ اما در محدودۀ استان مرکزی باوجود داشتن تعداد زیادی از این صندوقها، در پژوهشهای موجود، چندان بدانها پرداخته نشده است؛ در عین حال که بسیاری از این آثار با گذشت زمان یا در حال تخریب بوده یا اینکه مفقود شدهاند. از این روی ضرورت داشت که در یک پژوهش مستقل و هدفمند، به بررسی و مطالعۀ این صندوقها پرداخته شود. با توجه به این تفاسیر، هدف اصلی پژوهش حاضر، بررسی ویژگیهای ظاهری و تزئینی صندوقهای چوبی استان مرکزی و مضامین کتیبههای بهکار رفته در آنها است. پرسشهای اصلی پژوهش حاضر نیز بدین شرح است، آثار چوبی مورد مطالعه چه ویژگیهای ظاهری، فنی و تزئینی دارند؟ مضامین کتیبههای بهکار رفته در آنها چیست؟ نظر به اینکه در بررسیهای میدانی صورت گرفته تعداد زیادی از این صندوقها شناسایی شد که عمدتاً مربوط به قرون متأخر اسلامی هستند، در پژوهش حاضر صرفاً آثار چوبی قبل از دورۀ صفویه بررسی شدهاند. برای نیل به این هدف، از روش توصیفی - تحلیلی برای انجام پژوهش حاضر استفاده شده و شیوۀ گردآوری اطلاعات در آن بر پایۀ مطالعات میدانی و کتابخانهای است. با انجام پژوهش حاضر تعداد نه عدد صندوق شناسایی شد که قدمت آنها در بازۀ زمانی قرن چهارم تا اوایل قرن دهم هجری قرار دارند. این صندوقها از چهار فرم مختلف برخوردار بوده و شیوههای مختلف تزئینی در آنها بهکار رفته که بعضاً قابل مقایسه با برخی آثار چوبی مناطق دیگر هستند. کتیبههای بهکار رفته در این آثار نیز شامل برخی آیات قرآن، برخی اشعار فارسی مذهبی، معرفی صاحب قبر و ماده تاریخ است. این کتیبهها به خط کوفی، محقق، نسخ و ثلث نگاشته شده و برخی از آنها توسط هنرمندان دو شهر سلطانیه و جوشقان، ساخته شدهاند.
