The generation of novel ideas and innovative initiatives is considered one of the fundamental cognitive characteristics of human beings, which can lead to both individual and social success. This important attribute is referred to as creativity. In addition to enhancing creative thinking, creativity contributes to improved decision-making and the development of problem-solving skills.On the other hand, artistic activities and art education play a significant role in fostering creativity. The present study aims to explain experts’ perspectives on the role of art education in the development of creative thinking. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach, employing content analysis and semi-structured interviews as the primary data collection method. The participants included experts in educational psychology and pedagogy, as well as professors in the field of art education. They were selected through purposive and convenience sampling based on the criterion of theoretical saturation. In total, nine participants were selected and analyzed. The data analysis method was based on Attired-Stirling’s (2001) thematic analysis, which led to the identification of basic, organizing, and global themes. The validity of the findings was ensured through the use of audit trail procedures and member checking. The findings of the study revealed 36 basic themes, including diverse forms of action, varying outcomes, art as a combination of reason and emotion, creativity as distinct from reason and emotion, creativity as an extension of both reason and emotion, and simplicity and fluency as conditions for the emergence of creativity. Furthermore, four organizing themes—fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration—were identified, along with one overarching global theme titled Art and Creative Thinking. The results regarding the role of art education in fostering creative thinking indicate a process-oriented perspective on creativity from the viewpoint of experts. Among the identified components, flexibility and originality emerged as the most prominent dimensions, as emphasized by all participants. Additionally, fluency and elaboration were identified as other significant organizing themes highlighted by the participants.
