هرمنوتیک مدرن که اریک هرش یکی از پایه گذاران آن است، در واقع پلی میان هرمنوتیک سنتی و هرمونتیک فلسفی است. هرمنوتیک سنتی قائل به اصالت نیت مؤلف در تفسیر آثار بود و در مقابل هرمنوتیک فلسفی مخاطب را در تفسیر اثر هنری شریک دانسته و به تعداد مخاطبان آگاه، تفسیر اثر هنری را قابل قبول دانستند. اریک هرش معتقد است با استفاده از مراحل سه گانه ی معنای ظاهری، حدس اولیه و تفسیر اثر، مخاطب می تواند به نیت مؤلف نزدیک شود؛ به عبارت دیگر مقصد همان نیت مؤلف (هرمنوتیک سنتی) است؛ اما می توان از مسیرهای مختلف (هرمنوتیک فلسفی) به آن نزدیک شد. بسط این دیدگاه موضوع پژوهش حاضر است که با هدف شناسایی بیشتر کاشی های ایلخانی دو نمونه از کاشی های مکشوفه از امامزاده جعفر (ع) دامغان را مورد بررسی قرار داده است. روش پژوهش توصیفی تحلیلی و بر مبنای آرای هرمنوتیکی اریک هرش صورت گرفته است. بر این مبنا مراحل تفسیر آثار را با استفاده از ارتباط متن و تصویر پیموده تا به معنای اثر و نیت مؤلف نزدیک شود. این پژوهش به دنبال پاسخگویی به این پرسش ها است که چه ارتباطی بین متن و نقوش کاشی های ایلخانی وجود دارد؟ و چگونه می توان با استفاده از روش هرمنوتیک مدرن به این ارتباط پی برد؟ از نتایج این پژوهش می توان به ارتباط بین علوم رایج در این دوره از جمله ستاره شناسی و نقوش کاشی ها، اشاره کرد و این که در این کاشی ها نقوشی مطابق با نجوم و صورت-های فلکی استفاده شده است.
