Carpet weaving in Gilan, unlike the well-known carpet-weaving centers of Iran, has been the subject of limited systematic research, leaving the region’s role in Iran’s carpet production largely ambiguous. The existence of five remaining qālīcheh (small carpets) from the years 1305–1306 AH SH, produced in Dār al-Masākin of Rasht under the supervision of the Baldieh (municipality) according to the mayor’s proposal at the time, constitutes one of the few documented evidences of carpet-weaving activity in this area. This study aims to examine the technical and aesthetic aspects of these works and to reassess their position within the broader context of Iranian carpet weaving. The research employs a descriptive–analytical methodology with a historical approach, based on data collection from library sources, field surveys, and direct observation of the samples. Findings indicate that these qālīcheh were produced by Gilanese (Rashti) weavers using local raw materials, combined with vegetal and mineral dyeing techniques, yet under the influence of design patterns and supervision of migrant master weavers from Kashan. Technical analysis reveals a knot density ranging from 35 to 50 knots per 6.5 cm, a Persian weaving structure, and a synergy between the skills of Gilanese weavers and the specialized knowledge imported from Kashan, Farahan, and Saruq. Aesthetically, all samples feature lachak-toranj designs, with indigo and cream colors being the most prominent; the balanced distribution of dark and light colors reflects the urban design traditions of the period. Among the five samples, three include inscriptions (katibe), while two do not. The results demonstrate that these qālīcheh are not only significant from technical and aesthetic perspectives but also serve as reliable documentation to clarify Gilan’s contribution to the history of Iranian carpet weaving and the impact of social conditions, master weaver migration, and municipal policies on the production of this period.
